Karen joined WAL in the summer of 2008. Lakes and streams have played an important role in Karen's life. Karen has lived in many places—New York, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Wisconsin. Whether in a desert or on an island, she has observed that our relationship with water is complex and nuanced

"Wisconsin is a water-rich state, and we are lucky for it. Our identity, industries, and recreation are supported by water; it is deep in our bones," says Karen. "The problems affecting Wisconsin’s communities and relationships with water are not unique, but our strong network of citizens and partnerships is, and together we will determine the future of our waters."

Susan Tesarik has been working for WAL since 1999. She provides statewide technical assistance to lake groups, local officials, and county zoning and land conservation departments about lake classification and other locally-led water resource protection strategies. She implements educational programs about the impacts of development on our waters, citizen involvement in community land use decisions, shoreland zoning policy options, locally-led water resource protection projects, and organizational capacity-building. Susan is currently working on a master’s degree at the University of Wisconsin at Madison in Water Resources Management, focusing in Urban and Regional Planning. She works part-time at WAL during school semesters and full-time over breaks. Prior to joining WAL, Susan worked with land and water conservation programs at the county level for three and a half years. She inventoried agricultural watershed non-point source pollution sources, set pollution reduction goals and educational goals for priority watershed management plans, and implemented educational programs for watershed landowners.
Tami Jackson joined WAL in 2005. She has worked for several non-profit groups and the Department of Natural Resources in a variety of communication roles. She has a master’s degree in English Technical Communications. Her combination of communications training, environmental studies background, educational outreach experience, and technical skills is an asset to increasing awareness and participation in lake issues.
